Several miscalculations were made that helped lead to the disaster of Streight’s Raid, most prominent being an overestimation of the number of Union sympathizers in northern Alabama. While Streight did receive some help from the populace along the way, it was not of the size or scope that he had anticipated. A constant overestimation of the size of Forrest’s force was an almost equal impediment to the success of the raid.
